With warmer weather comes shorts and skirts — and more visibility for your unsightly veins. Fortunately, endovenous laser ablation can make your legs look smoother and clearer in almost no time.
At our nationally-recognized center for excellence in New Hyde Park, New York, Dr. Mark Schwartz and our highly skilled team at North Shore Vein Center use cutting-edge treatments for all your vein-related issues. Whether you have spider veins on your face or varicose veins on your legs, we offer minimally-invasive procedures that can help you look and feel your best.
Varicose veins
Varicose veins strike up to one in three Americans and occur when valves in the leg veins do not close properly. Instead of returning to the heart, blood collects in the veins, causing them to bulge and twist.
Typically varicose veins are blue or purple. They don’t cause any pain in some people, while for others they may bring discomfort, burning, throbbing, or cramping.
Varicose veins can affect anyone, but they are more likely to occur with aging as the valves get damaged and weakened over time. Women are also more at risk, possibly due to hormonal changes including pregnancy and menopause. Being obese, standing or sitting for extended periods of time, and having a family history of varicose veins can also increase your chances.
Endovenous laser ablation
Endovenous laser ablation is a state-of-the-art procedure that begins with local anesthetic and a small incision made in the vein. Next the micro-pulsing laser tip from the CoolTouch CTEV™ Laser System raises the temperature of the vein, which makes it close off and shrink. Blood then reroutes to flow through other nearby veins instead.
At a follow-up appointment a week after the procedure, we evaluate the results and determine if you need any additional minor treatment.
Benefits
This innovative varicose vein procedure has a number of benefits. Not only will you see improvement right after the treatment, but there is no downtime involved. You wear compression stockings afterward, but otherwise, you can walk immediately and resume your normal daily activities.
Strenuous exercise can be done within several days. Compared to other varicose vein treatments, there is less bruising. Scarring is either very minor or nonexistent. In addition, unlike some other types of vein treatments which are performed in a hospital, we do endovenous laser ablation in our office in about 45 minutes.
